HUNTERSVILLE – Maiden Post 240 started a stretch of seven games in eight days on Friday night with a 3-2 victory in Area IV American Legion baseball over Huntersville Post 321.
In a game played at Hopewell High, the Salamanders improved to 2-0 in one-run decisions this season by winning. They are 8-2 overall and 7-2 in Area IV East games heading into Saturday’s home game at 7 p.m. against the Lincoln County Cardinals.
Post 240 is also at home, at Maiden High, on Sunday at 7 p.m. against Henderson County, then plays games Monday (at Kings Mountain), Tuesday (at Burke County), Wednesday (Mint Hill at Independence High) and Friday (Hickory at the Legion Fairgrounds).
On Friday night, the Salamanders won a game that had only eight hits, four by Maiden and four by Huntersville.
Taylor Tibbs, Josh Frye and Mac Beam each had a hit and scored once for the Salamanders, whose other one-run game this season was a 5-4 victory at home over Union County on June 1.
Grayeson Brown and Drew Huffman each drove in a run for Maiden.
Spencer Ledford, in relief of Bryson Ledford, picked up a win for the Salamanders after he pitched four innings (three hits, one run, two walks, three strikeouts).
Bryson Ledford started and went three innings for Post 240, giving up one hit, a run (unearned) with six walks and two strikeouts.
Maiden led 1-0 after scoring a run in the second inning before Huntersville scored a run in the bottom of the third inning.
A run in the bottom of the fifth inning put Huntersville in front 2-1, but Maiden scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to gain a 3-2 edge.
Maiden is virtually in a tie for the Area IV East Division lead, with Shelby at 6-1 and the Salamanders, off to their best start ever, at 7-2 in division games.
Post 240 beat Shelby 13-0 in five innings on June 2 in Shelby, and the teams meet again on June 29 at Maiden.
East Division teams are playing an 18-game schedule that is set to end on July 4. The Area IV playoffs are scheduled to begin on July 7.
