SHELBY – The best start in the history of Maiden Post 240 American Legion baseball continued on Saturday night behind a big night from the first five batters in the lineup.
Those five combined to go 10-for-17, score 11 runs and drive in four as Post 240 remained unbeaten with a five-inning, 13-0 road victory over previously unbeaten Shelby at Shelby High.
Maiden is averaging 8.8 runs this season.
Post 240 (5-0) plays its fifth game in five nights on Sunday at 7 p.m. – a nine-inning game against Cherryville at Cherryville High – and then plays Gastonia at Maiden High on Monday night at 7 p.m.
After facing Belmont Post 144 on Wednesday in a doubleheader (5:30 p.m.) at Belmont Abbey College, Maiden will be idle until June 14.
On Saturday night, head coach David Williams’ Salamanders collected 17 hits – all singles – and got five solid innings from pitcher Ross Fowler to win again.
Leadoff hitter Ty Williams went 3-for-4 for Maiden, followed by Grayson Brown going 1-for-4, Jay Sipe going 4-for-4 with an RBI and three runs, No. 4 hitter Brantley Durham going 1-for-3 and scoring three runs and No. 5 hitter Josh Frye picking up a hit, driving in three runs and scoring twice.
Bryson Ledford added two hits and three RBIs, Ryan Lyda was 2-for-3 and drove in two runs and Dylan Abernathy added two hits and drove in three runs.
Fowler threw five innings, giving up four hits, no runs, walking two and striking out three.
Shelby got two hits from Tucker Greene and Logan McNeely and David Marble had one each.
Maiden scored five runs in the first inning and four in each of the next two to lead by 13 runs.
Dylan Izzi lasted only 1 1/3 innings as Shelby’s starter. He allowed eight hits, eight runs (four earned), walked none and struck out one.
In the five-run first, Sipe and Frye had run-scoring singles, an error scored two runs and Abernathy added an RBI single.
Maiden had the bases loaded in the second inning after an error and got a run via Frye’s groundball out, two from Ledford’s single and a single by Abernathy made it 9-0.
In the third inning, Frye drew a bases-loaded walk, and Leford drove in a run with a groundball out.
Shelby had a runner on base in the fifth inning but Fowler had a strikeout to end the game.
Maiden’s roster this season is made up of 11 players from Maiden, eight from Bandys, two from Statesville Christian, one from Newton-Conover and two college players. Williams’ assistant coach is Bandys head coach Frank Porter.
