CATAWBA – T.J. Rasar, who knows his way around the mound at Bandys High, pitched well on Friday night as Maiden Post 240 opened its American Legion baseball season with a 9-2 victory over visiting Kings Mountain.
The Salamanders were scheduled to start the new season at Maiden High — where they will play their home games this season – but wet field conditions there shifted the game to Bandys.
Maiden plays its second game on Saturday night, facing Lincoln County at 7 p.m. at East Lincoln High, and the Salamanders go to Cherryville for a 7 p.m. game on Sunday.
Maiden plays Hickory Post 48 at the Legion Fairgrounds on Monday at 7 p.m., and the next game scheduled at Maiden is Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Post 48.
On Friday night, Rasar — the pitching ace this season for a 20-win Bandys team — worked 5 1/3 innings. He gave up six hits, two runs (one earned) with one walk and six strikeouts.
Shortstop Grayson Brown, batting No. 2 in the order for Maiden, had two hits and drove in two runs while Brantley Durham and Cy Spencer each added two hits and drove in a run for Post 240.
Daniel Bagwell took a loss for Kings Mountain after pitching four innings. He gave up nine hits, eight runs (all earned), walked one and struck out four.
Maiden had 11 hits to Kings Mountain’s seven, and both teams made three errors.
Kings Mountain scored twice in the first inning for a lead, but Post 240 answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Maiden went ahead for good with a three-run fourth inning and added four more runs in the fifth inning to lead 9-2.
Post 240 is playing in a 10-team East Division that includes the Gaston Braves, Gastonia, Huntersville, Lincoln County, Kings Mountain, Mint Hill, Pineville, Shelby and Union County. The Area IV division will have 18 division games.
The West Division of Area IV has nine teams – Asheville, Burke County, Burnsville, Caldwell County, Cherryville, Henderson County, Hickory, Rutherford County and Taylorsville – and they’ll play a 16-game division schedule.
The postseason is scheduled to begin on July 7, with the state tournament set for July 26-30 at High Point, the Southeast Regional scheduled Aug. 1-5 in Asheboro and the Legion World Series returns to Shelby on Aug. 16-21.
