MAIDEN – Maiden High’s athletic department is preparing to honor one of the best football teams in school history on Oct. 12 when the Blue Devils are at home against North Lincoln.

At that South Fork 2A game that kicks off at 7:30 p.m., the school will honor the players on its 1978 state 2A title team on the 40th anniversary of a victory over Tabor City in the championship game.

The school athletic department is reaching out to players, coaches, managers and cheerleaders who were a part of the 1978 season, asking them to arrive at 6 p.m. on Oct. 12 and gather at the grassy area outside the main gym.

The group will meet with athletic director Caine Houser and associate athletic director Butch Parker, hosting an opportunity for everyone involved in the 1978 season to gather for reminiscing. Tail gaiting will also be permitted.

At 6:30 p.m., the group will visit the school to view a recently hung giant photo of the 1978 team. At 6:45, the group will head for Thomas E. Brown Stadium for its reserved seating section.

After the national anthem, the team will be presented to the fans.

Parker has asked that families who have someone involved in the 1978 season who is deceased contact him — at (828) 428-8107, ext 110 — so the memory of those individuals can be honored as part of the recognition.

More details will be provided by the Maiden athletic department leading up to Oct. 12.
