Blue Devils’ defense hasn’t allowed a score in 2-0 start

In records dating back to 1980, Maiden has scored more than the 68 points it had Friday night only four times – 70-8 over Highland Tech at Maiden in 2002, 72-0 at Highland Tech in 2003, 72-6 at home over Polk County in 2011 and a 70-46 victory over Bunker Hill on the road in 2011.

ICARD – A crushing defense and another 200-yard passing game by Bain Sipe ignited Maiden High on Friday night as the visiting Blue Devils cruised past East Burke 68-0 to improve to 2-0.

Maiden’s defense has not allowed a point yet by an opposing offense after the only points Fred T. Foard scored in a season-opening 21-6 loss was via a kickoff.

Sipe — making his second start — completed seven of nine passes for 208 yards and threw scoring passes to Montrell Stinson and Brennan James when Maiden built a 14-0 lead through one quarter.

The Blue Devils led 41-0 at the half.

Malik Kennedy ran for 175 yards on 10 carries and two scored on runs of 44 and 10 yards for Maiden, Caleb McDaniel caught a TD pass, threw for a TD and ran for a score, and Lee Turner had two scoring runs among his 11 carries for 68 yards.

The Blue Devils ran for 260 yards and threw for 276 while the Maiden defense held the Cavs (1-1) to 83 yards (42 rushing on 32 carries and 41 passing).

Dylan Abernathy caught a 25-yard for a score from McDaniel, and his 45-yard punt return for a TD in the third quarter extended Maiden’s lead to 42-0.

Maiden won for the third time in four series games with the Cavs and at East Burke for the third time.

The Blue Devils had last played in Icard in 2012, winning 14-0.

Maiden head coach Will Byrne picked up his 21st career win (21-6).

The Blue Devils go for a 3-0 start at home on Friday night by going for their 29th straight win over Bunker Hill.

East Burke is at home Friday night at 7:30 p.m., playing arch-rival Freedom in the annual Fat Friday game (7:30 p.m.)

Notes

Maiden has won 14 straight regular-season games, including all 11 last season … The streak started with a 65-47 win at Lincolnton to close the 2016 season after East Lincoln had beaten Maiden 49-35 at Maiden… The 68 points allowed is the most by East Burke in records dating back to 1980… Patton beat the Cavs 63-0 last season at Patton.. East Burke’s biggest scoring game since 1980 came in 1984, a 63-9 victory over Hibriten in Icard.
