HICKORY – That’s 13 wins in a row for Lenoir-Rhyne University’s sizzling women’s softball team.
The Bears beat visiting Queens 6-1 and 4-2 on Wednesday at Bears Field to remain tied with Carson-Newman for first place in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC).
The league regular-season championship will be decided on the field on Saturday – the Bears’ Senior Day – when Carson-Newman visits for a doubleheader that begins at 2 p.m.
LRU (43-8, 15-3) is ranked No. 16 in NCAA Division II.
In Wednesday’s games:
LRU 6, Queens 1: The Bears, up 2-1, scored four runs in the fifth inning to take control. The inning was highlighted by a two-run single from first baseman Sydney Landreth.
Madison Poe’s double was the game-winning hit and Sydney Miller gained a pitching win in relief after coming on in the third inning.
Sydney Ditto of Queens (20-27, 6-14) and the Bears’ Erin Boone hit home runs leading off each team’s first at-bat.
Courtney Pearson (14-16) took the pitching loss for the Royals.
LRU 4, Queens 2: Boone had a two-run single in a three-run second inning to lead the Bears to a sweep.
Madison Carter scored two runs and Miller picked up the pitching win, with Ty Triplett coming on in relief to earn her first save of the season.
Evie Scott (6-7) was the losing pitcher for Queens.
