CHAPEL HILL — Record-setting football star Sage Surratt of Lincolnton High was named during the week as the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) Male Athlete of the Year.

Surratt, who previously played at East Lincoln, had sterling seasons as a senior with the Wolves in football as a wide receiver and also in boys’ basketball. He will play college football at Wake Forest. He became the first athlete in state history to win Associated Press Player of the Year in football and basketball.

Sage Surratt follows his older brother, Chazz, as the NCHSAA’s top male athlete of the year. The elder Surratt won the 2016 award after also starting in football and basketball at East Lincoln. He made a verbal commitment to Duke for football but later had a change of heart and signed with North Carolina, where he had a solid game for the Tar Heels in spring football.

The NCHSAA’s Female Athlete of the Year went to MiKayla Boykin of Clinton, who had a big senior season in basketball after missing the previous two seasons with a knee injury. She led Clinton to a state 2A title and set records for single-game scoring of 62 and later topping hat with a 63-point game.
