SHELBY EASTER TOURNAMENT: Crest scores 6 runs in first inning, wins championship

Crest scored 31 runs in winning three games and the Shelby Easter tournament title.

SHELBY – A six-run first inning powered Crest High to an 8-3 victory over Kings Mountain and the title in the Shelby Easter baseball tournament on Thursday night.

Crest won all of three of its tournament games, scoring 31 runs, to improve to 11-6 overall.

In the final, Riley Cheek and John Kyle Mitchell each had two hits for the Chargers, who are in third place in the chase for a South Mountain Athletic 2A-3A title, They are two games behind co-leaders East Rutherford and R-S Central with four league games to go.

C.J. Mayhue picked up a pitching win against the Mountaineers (9-10, in fifth place in the SMAC 2A-3A).

Logan McNeely of Crest was named tournament MVP.

Crest has two conference games next week, at home against East Burke on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and at East Rutherford next Friday at 7 p.m.

Kings Mountain has three games next week, sandwiching a 7 p.m. game on Tuesday at R-S Central on Tuesday and a home game next Friday against Chase at 7 p.m. around a non-league game at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at East Gaston.
