After winning on Tuesday night, the Red Tornadoes are assured of no worse than a share of a conference girls’ soccer title.

HICKORY – Hickory High got one goal each from nine players on Tuesday night, winning 9-1 over visiting Patton to wrap up at least a share of the Northwestern 3A-4A girls’ soccer championship.

The Red Tornadoes improved to 16-3 overall and they are 11-2-0 in the conference with only Freedom to play – on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Hickory – to close out the regular season.

Second-place Fred T. Foard (10-3 league) is the only team that could catch the Red Tornadoes and share the title, which would take Freedom beating the Red Tornadoes and Foard — on Thursday in Boone at 6:30 p.m. — beating third-place Watauga (9-2-2).

Scoring goals for Hickory in the win over Patton were Ayden Vaughan, Pammy Fish, Elizabeth Betancourt, Adrienne Cameron, Celeste Land, Amy Herfurth and Maddie Pitts.

Jovana Sanchez had four assists for Hickory with Jess LaFrancis adding two and

Lauren Hayes, Dani Canaday and Betancourt each added one.

Hickory’s only loss in its last eight matches was 1-0 against Watauga.

The Red Tornadoes have won 68 matches over the past four seasons, including this year’s 16.
