NEWTON – Fred T. Foard High’s girls kept alive a hope of winning a Northwestern 3A-4A title on Tuesday night by nipping visiting Freedom 4-0.
The Tigers are 10-3-0 in the league and face Watauga on the road on Thursday. They are one match back of league-leading Hickory, which assured itself of at least sharing the conference title by beating Patton 9-1 on Tuesday night at Hickory.
Audrey Sigmon scored twice to lead Foard on Tuesday, and Katherine Ellis and Katie Tice each scored once.
Foard outshot Freedom (5-12-1, 1-11-1) by 25-7 and the Tigers had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Freedom closes its conference schedule on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. match at Hickory. The Patriots have a regular-season finale on Friday at 5 p.m. against non-league rival East Burke.
