LINCOLN COUNTY HALL OF FAME: This year’s class includes N. Lincoln’s Bazzle

LINCOLNTON – The next class of the Lincoln County Sports Hall of Fame will include Nick Bazzle, head football coach at North Lincoln and a former head coach at Newton-Conover and Alexander Central.

The class, announced on Thursday, also includes Jimmy Cherry, Jay Heafner, Nancy Little and Joanne Potts.

Cherry has been public address announcer in football at East Lincoln High for more than 25 years and an active youth sports coach in the Denver, N.C., area.

Heafner starred in baseball at West Lincoln High and at Davidson and is currently a scout for the Texas Rangers.

Little graduated from Rock Springs High and was the first female from Lincoln County to coach an NCAA Division I program. After coaching at West Lincoln and East Lincoln, she was head coach at High Point College and then at Central Florida.

Potts was a basketball star in the late 1950s at Maiden High, scoring 2,121 points in just 66 games. She went on to play pro basketball. An Appalachian State graduated, she taught business in the Gaston and Lincoln schools during her career.

Because of COVID restrictions, the 2020 class will be inducted with the 2021 class at a date to be determined.
