HICKORY – Hickory High tennis player Edgar Ellis has announced he will continue his tennis career at Randolph College in Lynchburg, Va.

He will attend the college on an academic scholarship.

Randolph College plays NCAA Division III athletics and Division III schools don’t offer athletic scholarships.

“I chose Randolph because of the excellent academics and staff, along with the location and atmosphere of the city,” Ellis said in a press release from the Hickory City Public Schools. “Also, Randolph is well-known for the school’s fantastic tennis program led by Coach Jamie Megginson.”

Ellis is headed into the SUPER STEM Program at Randolph, where only 24 incoming freshman were selected, the release said.

He is undecided on a major but is interested in studying science in preparation for possibly attending medical school.

Ellis began playing tennis at the age of 7.

“Through tennis, I have learned that one must take responsibility for their own actions,” Ellis said in the release. “Tennis is not like football or other team sports, because all of the weight is on yourself; there is no one else to blame if you mess up.

“It has made me a more independent person, at the same time enhancing my skills to lead and make lasting friendships with my teammates.”

Ellis is a member of the National Honors Society and Beta Club.
