HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Foard hands South Caldwell first league loss

Fred T. Foard High tripped visiting South Caldwell 4-1 on Friday in Northwestern 3A-4A softball, keeping the Spartans from going unbeaten in league play.

Foard finished 11-3 in the conference and in second place, with South Caldwell at 12-1 in league games heading into a 12:30 p.m. home game against Watauga on Saturday.

There is one other league game on Saturday with Freedom visiting Patton at 8 a.m.

The only spots in the standing locked are first place (South Caldwell), second place (Foard), seventh place (Patton) and last place (Hickory).

Freedom can tie Hibriten for third by beating Patton and there could be three-way tie for fourth depending on the outcomes of Saturday’s games.

St. Stephens 10, Freedom 7: At Freedom, the Indians won to improve to 7-7 in conference play.

Four teams are tightly bunched behind South Caldwell and Foard – the Indians at 7-7, Hibriten at 8-6, Freedom at 7-6 and Watauga at 6-7.

Hibriten 19, Patton 1: The Panthers rolled at home, finishing 8-6 in conference play, and they will finish no worse than tied for third place.

Watauga 17, Hickory 3: At Watauga, the Pioneers sent the Red Tornadoes to a loss and a winless conference record of 0-14.

SMAC 2A-3A

Crest 6, East Rutherford 2: Crest won on the road, locking up no worse than a tie for second place.

The Chargers improved to 10-4 with two league games to go and they trail R-S Central (14-1) by three games.

R-S Central 4, East Burke 0: In Icard, the Hilltoppers assured themselves of winning the conference title by beating the Cavs.

At 13-1 in league games, R-S Central has a three game lead over Crest (10-4) with two league games left.

East Burke dropped to 7-6 in league play.
