HICKORY – Jose Almonte isn’t a power hitter by nature, but he hit his first of the season on Monday night to lift the Hickory Crawdads past Greensboro 3-2 in 10 innings.

His solo shot in the 10th inning improved the Crawdads to 14-23 as they head into a Tuesday morning game (10:30 a.m. first pitch) that will close a four-game South Atlantic League (SAL) series with the Grasshoppers.

Almonte went 2-for-4 and three Hickory pitchers combined to two-hit Greensboro (21-16). He hit in the No. 7 spot in the Crawdads’ lineup and celebrated at home plate after the 11th home run of his minor league career.

Jonathan Hernandez threw seven innings for the Crawdads, walking two and striking out six, and the win went to C.D. Pelham in relief. Pelham threw 1 1/3 innings.

After Tuesday’s game, the Crawdads get a day off before beginning a round trip. It starts Thursday night in Kannapolis at 7:05 p.m. The teams play two games on Friday and on Saturday and Sunday before the Crawdads head to Lexington, Ky., next.

Hickory’s next homestand begins May 25 against Asheville and Kannapolis visits L.P. Frans Stadium after that.
