KANNAPOLIS — Grant Massey drove in five runs on Sunday to spark Kannapolis as it nipped visiting Hickory 9-8 in South Atlantic League (SAL) baseball.
Massey went 2-for-3 to back relief pitching by Danny Dopico, who gained a win, and a scoreless ninth inning by Ben Wright that earned him a save.
Hickory scored four runs in the second inning and its last four in the fifth inning.
After the game was tied at 4, the Intimidators grabbed a 7-4 lead and Hickory then went up 8-7 in the fifth inning. Kannapolis scored twice in the seventh inning.
The loss dropped Hickory to 18-25 and left Kannapolis at 22-19.
The Crawdads are now headed to Lexington (Ky.) for three games, the first on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Game 2 of the series is Tuesday at 7:05 p.m., and the series finale is at 12:35 p.m. on Wednesday.
Hickory opens a homestand on Thursday night against Asheville at L.P. Frans Stadium.
