COLLEGE WOMEN’S GOLF: Bears’ Hartsell gains bid to play in NCAA regionals

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Lenoir-Rhyne University women’s golfer Abbey Hartsell, a former prep star at Alexander Central High, is headed to the NCAA Division II South Super Regional.

Hartsell, a sophomore, earned a spot as an individual in the field for a two-day event that begins next Monday at The Members Club at Woodcreek in Elgin, S.C.

She was recently named the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) women’s Golfer of the Year after leading LRU to its first conference championship in 13 years

Hartsell won two tournaments this year, the Tusculum Fall Classic in late September and the Patsy Rendleman Invitational in early October in Salisbury. She was second in the Hilton Head Lakes Invitational, falling in a playoff, in the first week of March.

LRU has not had a team or individual golfer each the NCAA Division II tournament since 2003.

Each super regional has both team and individual competition conducted concurrently with 12 teams and six individuals from non-qualifying teams at each site.

The tournaments are 54 holes, with the top three teams along with the top three individuals not with a team from each super regional advancing to the championships.

The championship tournament is scheduled May 17-20 at the Findlay (Ohio) Country Club. A field of 72 will play for the title.
