CHAPEL HILL – Duke and Wallace Wade Stadium are returning to the mix of sites for state high school football championship game sites.

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) announced Thursday it has agreed with the Triangle Sports Commission (TSC) for Duke to re-enter the site of its football title games and will have two in Durham next season.

Duke had previously played host to state football finals but dropped out of that mix after games in 2006.

The other sites the NCHSAA will continue to use for the title games are N.C. State’s Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, North Carolina’s Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill and Wake Forest’s BB&T Field in Winston-Salem.

There are eight state football title games – 1A, 1AA, 2A, 2AA, 3A, 3AA, 4A and 4AA – and there will be two games at each location. The NCHSAA decides what classifications go to what location once the championship matchups are set (they are Dec. 9 this year).

In a press release by the NCHSAA, Commissioner Que Tucker said: “When we were approached by the Triangle Sports Commission about the possibility of playing state championship games at the newly renovated Wallace Wade Stadium, we were eager to see if an arrangement could be worked out.

“After touring the facility and seeing the many upgrades and improvements Duke has made since 2006, the decision to again include Durham and Duke in the championship schedule was an easy one.

“Knowing the partnership and support available from the Triangle Sports Commission helped solidify that decision!”
