DENVER — Lincoln Charter High has promoted assistant boys’ basketball coach James (J.B.) Burnett to head coach, replacing Brad Gabriel.

BURNETT

Gabriel, a former star guard at Bandys High whose coaching tenure includes guiding his alma mater’s boys’ team and one year coaching the North Iredell girls, resigned after last season.

Gabriel’s teams won nearly 200 games at Lincoln Charter in eight seasons (197-40) and won seven conference championships, a state title in 2017 and two state championship game appearances.

He resigned two weeks after Lincoln Charter played and lost in the state 1A title game, and he intends to remain at the school as a teacher.

Gabriel’s son, Jackson, is playing basketball at Milligan College in Tennessee, and Gabriel indicated he is getting out in order to be able to see his son play more often and spend more time with his family.
