WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Lenoir-Rhyne win streak at 3 after victory at Tusculum

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – Lenoir-Rhyne University extended its win streak in women’s soccer to three matches on Wednesday by downing Tusculum 3-1 on the road in a South Atlantic Conference (SAC) match.

Three Bears scored a goal each as they improved to 5-2-1 overall and 3-1 in the SAC while dropping Tusculum to 3-4-1, 1-2.

Judith Verdaguer scored her second goal of the season – in the 17th minute – to get LRU an early 1-0 lead.

Abbie Brown’s seventh goal of the season came next, putting the Bears in front 2-0 by halftime.

A goal by Tusculum’s Sonja Ballmert in the 47th minute got the Pioneers within 2-1 before Hannah van Eerden scored in the 71st minute – her second of the season – to put LRU up 3-1.

LRU led 12-10 in overall shots and 6-3 in shots on goal while Tusculum had 14 fouls to six by the Bears.

Brown is leading LRU with seven goals, third in the SAC, and she is second in the league in shots (38) and in points (17).

LRU senior Loren Sterling is second in the SAC with 33 saves, and her save percentage (.805) is fifth in the league while her goals against average (0.96) ranks fourth.

The Bears have a home SAC match on Saturday at 1 p.m., facing Wingate.
