WOMEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE: Top-seeded Bears in league tournament final

WINGATE – Lenoir-Rhyne University’s women’s lacrosse team is back in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) title match for the fourth time in five seasons, playing Queens on Sunday for the crown.

The Bears (9-8), top tournament seed after going unbeaten in the league regular season, advanced on Friday with a 13-6 semifinal victory over Wingate at Wingate.

LRU meets No. 2 seed Queens (10-8) on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Wingate for the championship.

Junior midfielder Rachel Elmore led the Bears past fourth-seeded Wingate with a match-high five goals, giving her 49 for the year.

LRU was up 7-5 with 26:11 in the second half before scoring the next six goals.

Junior attacker Gabby Sousa added three scores – giving her a school single-season record 59 goals – while sophomore attacker Cathleen Gaffney finished with a school-record eight assists as the Bears defeated the Bulldogs for the second time this year.

Six players scored one goal for the Bulldogs while Nina Cifolilli dished out two assists and Arion Pierre stopped 12 shots in goal.

Senior goalkeeper Ines Flueck of LRU, the conference player of the year, made six saves.

The Bears held an advantage in both shots taken (30-22) and ground balls (10-8).

LRU has won seven of its last nine matches and is now 6-0 all-time against Wingate.
