MEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE: Bears battle Wingate on Sunday for league tourney crown

WINGATE – Lenoir-Rhyne University seeks its 13th straight win and a South Atlantic Conference (SAC) men’s lacrosse championship on Sunday.

The top-seeded Bears (16-1), ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division II, beat No. 4 Queens 14-7 on Friday to advance to a title match battle with second-seeded Wingate (10-5) at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Wingate.

LRU has won is 39-4 in its last 43 matches and is vying to win the SAC tournament for the second time (won it in 2016).

On Friday, Queens had a 3-2 lead in the second period before LRU reeled off four straight goals to take control.

Junior midfielder Eric Dickinson led the Bears with five goals, including the game-winner.

Junior attacker Joe Buduo added three goals for LRU, which went on a 6-0 run in the third period and finished with advantages in shots taken (54-35) and ground balls (40-30).

Senior goalkeeper Ryan Crompton made 16 saves in the victory while Anthony Valenza had 25 saves.

David Bryne led the Royals with two goals and one assist.

Buduo goes into Sunday’s match with a league-leading 58 goals and 84 total points, both LRU single-season records.
