MARS HILL – Gabby Sousa had six goals on Wednesday afternoon, leading Lenoir-Rhyne University to a 16-4 women’s lacrosse victory at Mars Hill that keeps the Bears undefeated in conference play.
The Bears (5-7, 5-0) share first place in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) with Catawba as they head into their next match on Saturday at home against league foe Lincoln Memorial at 4 p.m.
Mars Hill dropped to 2-8 overall and 0-5 in the SAC.
Sousa, a junior attacker from Delran, N.J., now had 40 goals for the season, third-best in the conference.
Junior midfielder Rachel Elmore added four goals for LRU – she now has 31 for the year – as the Bears raced to a 12-2 lead by halftime.
Sophomore attacker Cathleen Gaffney dished out five assists for the Bears, who held advantages in both shots taken (22-14) and ground balls (26-11).
LRU senior All-American goalkeeper Ines Flueck made three saves and picked up a win.
For Mars Hill, Olivia Hokanson scored her team-leading 37th goal of the year while Alexandria Holleran suffered a loss in goal despite five stops.
