WOMEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE: Mercyhurst overcomes 6 goals by Bears’ Elmore to win

HICKORY – Mercyhurst survived six goals by Lenoir-Rhyne University’s Rachel Elmore on Thursday to win 15-13 in women’s lacrosse at Moretz Stadium.

The Lakers (1-1), ranked No. 17 in NCAA Division II, dropped the Bears to 1-4 behind Angelina Simon’s four goals and a goal and six assists by Taylor Izzo.

Mercyhurst was ahead 13-7 after 16 ½ minutes in the second half.

Elmore, a junior midfielder from White Plains, N.Y., doubled her goals for the season on Thursday, with sophomore midfielder Kaley Harris and junior attacker Gabby Sousa each adding two goals for LRU.

Abbey Miller stopped five shots in goal for the Lakers, who had a 33-22 advantage in shots taken.

LRU senior goalkeeper Ines Flueck made 10 saves.

The Bears have played all five of their matches this season at home. Their first one on the road comes Saturday at 1 p.m. when they visit Wingate for a South Atlantic Conference (SAC) battle.
