HICKORY – Marin Felscoi scored five goals and Rebecca Luca broke a tie with back-to-back scores in the final six minutes on Tuesday as Belmont Abbey nipped Lenoir-Rhyne University 12-11 to open the Bears’ women’s lacrosse season.
The Bears got three goals each from Cathleen Gaffney and Gabby Sousa at Moretz Stadium.
LRU had a 27-20 edge in shots taken and 13-10 advantage in ground balls.
Annie Brannon made 10 stops in goal for Belmont Abbey (2-0) and senior Ines Flueck had five saves for LRU (0-1).
LRU will play the second of five straight home matches to start the season when Mount Olive visits on Saturday for a 4 p.m. start.
