WOMEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE: Bears open conference schedule by beating Wolves

HICKORY – Rachel Elmore and Gabby Sousa combined for eight goals – four each – to lead Lenoir-Rhyne University to a 16-6 victory over visiting Newberry, S.C., on Wednesday in women’s lacrosse.

The Bears (1-2, 1-0) began South Atlantic Conference (SAC) play with the win over Newberry (2-3, 0-1) at Moretz Stadium.

LRU raced to an 11-1 lead by halftime and led by as many as 13 goals in the second half.

In addition to Elmore and Sousa starring, sophomore attacker Cathleen Gaffney added two goals and a career-high five assists for the Bears. She has a team-high 14 points this season.

Senior Ines Flueck earned a win, playing in the first half, and Brandy Bowman took the loss despite making three saves for the Wolves.

Rachel Dillon and Helen Kuhn sparked Newberry with two goals each.

LRU is in a five-match homestand that continues on Sunday at noon at Moretz Stadium with a noon start against Saint Leo.
