HICKORY – Gabby Sousa will likely remember the day – for many reasons — when she scored her 100th goal in women’s lacrosse.

Sousa scored five on Wednesday afternoon, including a match-winner with 56 seconds left, as Lenoir-Rhyne University handed visiting Queens its first conference regular-season loss in history, 12-11.

he Royals (2-7, 1-1) had never lost a South Atlantic Conference regular-season match coming into Moretz Stadium on Wednesday, going 31-0 against league opponents.

But Sousa, a junior attacker from Delran, N.J., came up big as the Bears won to improve to 4-6 and 4-0 in the SAC.

LRU scored the last four goals of the match over the final six minutes. The Bears trailed 11-8 with fewer than six minutes to play.

Junior midfielder Rachel Elmore had four goals in addition to nine draw controls for LRU.

Queens was led by Hanna Scott with four goals, one assist and three ground balls as the Royals held advantages in both shots taken (30-21) and ground balls (18-8).

LRU senior goalkeeper Ines Flueck earned a win after stopping eight shots,

Queens’ Sarah Mitrecic made two saves but suffered a loss in goal.

Sousa now has 102 career goals, 33 of them this season, to help the Bears hold first place alone in the league standings.

LRU’s next match is on Sunday at 1 p.m. against No. 11 Rollins.
