ATLANTA – One of the top 30 women’s college basketball coaches under the age of 30 is on the staff at Lenoir-Rhyne University.
Sierra Simpson, who has been with the Bears for one season as an assistant coach after stints on coaching staffs at Wofford and Anderson (S.C.), made an elite list selected for the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) titled Thirty Under 30.

The list was developed to recognize 30 up-and-coming women’s basketball coaches age 30 and under at all levels of the game. Each honoree has exemplified their involvement in community service, mentorship, professional manner and professional association involvement.
Simpson has been promoted to associate head coach at LRU, effective immediately, by Bears head coach Cameron Sealey.
“Sierra makes me better, makes our staff better and definitely makes our players better,” Sealy said in a press release by LRU’s athletic program “She has earned this honor, she is a rising star in this profession and my only fear is that one day I may have to coach against her.
“This recognition comes at a perfect time as we elevate Sierra to Associate Head Coach. In a short period, Sierra has made a huge impact on our program at Lenoir Rhyne.
“As long as she feels she is developing as a coach — professional and person — I want her at LR guiding our student-athletes to that same standard.”
Simpson was also a standout player at Anderson S.C., and was named the 2014-15 SAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Year after leading Anderson to two SAC regular season titles (2012-13 and 2014-15), the 2013 SAC Tournament Championship and two berths in the NCAA Division II playoffs.
