HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University has announced Cameron Sealey, its head women’s basketball coach, won’t return next season.

An LRU press release said Sealey, head coach since 2017, resigned effective immediately.

“I want to thank Lenoir-Rhyne University for the opportunity to lead the women’s basketball program, and wish Lenoir-Rhyne University success in the future,” Sealey said in that press release.

Sealey — a former Bears player — coached teams that went 43-45 overall and 29-22 in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC). Her 2019 team reached the conference tournament semifinals.

“I want to thank Coach Sealey for her many contributions and service to Lenoir-Rhyne University,” LRU Vice President for Athletics Kim Pate said in the press release.

A national search will begin immediately to find the next coach, the press release said.

The press release did not indicate any other changes in the women’s basketball staff at LRU, and the school athletic website currently says TBA on head coach and doesn’t list any assistant coaches.

This is the second sudden and quick exit of a head coach in one of the major sports at LRU since last April.

Last April, the Bears suspended head baseball coach Tom Fleenor and ended up firing him (see article link) with virtually no details.
