HICKORY – Five Chowan players, led by Dhyamond Crenshaw’s 17 points, reached double figures on Monday night as the visiting Hawks downed Lenoir-Rhyne University 74-68 in women’s basketball.
Joanne Williams added a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds as Chowan remained unbeaten at 2-0.
Junior Madi Suddreth led LRU (1-2) with a game-high 21 points. Junior guard Kendall Toineeta flirted with a triple-double for the Bears, scoring 16 points, grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out six assists.
LRU was within 70-68 in the final 23 seconds on a three-point play by Suddreth. The Bears wiped out a 16-point deficit to get that close, but the Hawks scored the game’s final four points.
Chowan gained an early advantage by outscoring LRU 24-15 in the first quarter.
The Hawks forced 12 turnovers and hit 22 of 36 free-throw attempts.
Suddreth is averaging 17.3 points per game for LRU.
The Bears play their first road game next, at Winston-Salem State on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. start.
