ROCK HILL, S.C. – Two Lenoir-Rhyne University women’s basketball players – freshman Kennedy Weigt and junior Maddi Suddreth – were recognized Thursday as among the top players in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC).
Weigt, from Manteo, Ill., was on the All-Freshman team, and Suddreth, who is from Taylorsville and starred at Alexander Central High, earned honorable mention when the teams were released by conference officials.
Weigt played only 16 games this season due to an injury, averaging 10.3 points. She started 11 games and led the Bears in 3-pointers made (43).
Suddreth led LRU in points (14.5 per game), rebounds (7.1) and blocked shots (23). She started all 29 games and had four double-doubles, and she will also enter her senior season just 43 points away from 1,000 for her career.
The Bears had their second straight winning season with an overall mark of 15-14. They went 9-11 in the league, earning a No. 7 seed in the conference tournament.
Second-seeded Carson-Newman eliminated LRU from the league tournament on Wednesday with a 75-63 win in Jefferson City, Tenn.
The second-team All-SAC selections included Wingate’s Danasia Witherspoon, who played high school basketball at Hickory.
