Bears fresh off home victory over eighth-ranked Catawba

HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University’s Senior Night in women’s soccer is Friday night at 7 p.m. against Shaw University in the final regular-season home match of the season for the Bears.

LRU (8-5-1, 6-3 South Atlantic Conference) comes in off a 4-1 home victory on Wednesday night over Catawba, No. 8 in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional rankings.

The loss dropped Catawba to 10-3 overall and 5-3 in the SAC.

LRU grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the first 23 minutes against Catawba, getting goals by sophomore Hannah van Eerden (fourth of the year) and senior Claire Niebergall (third).

Junior Aqsa Mushtaq (three on the year) and senior Abbie Brown (11) added one each in the second half as well to secure the victory.

Catawba’s only goal, in the 88th minute, was by Maddie Peck.

LRU had 11 shots, eight of them on goal.

Senior keeper Loren Sterling had four saves while Shelby Thompson made four saves for Catawba.

LRU is in second place in the SAC, three points behind Carson-Newman.
