MEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Bears, ranked No. 4 in Southeast, face Belmont Abbey next

HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University’s men are No. 4 in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional rankings as they prepare to play Belmont Abbey on the road on Saturday at 7 p.m.

The Bears enjoyed a Senior Day win on Wednesday at home, beating Catawba in a South Atlantic Conference (SAC) match 4-1, and they have won five of their last seven matches.

Catawba fell to 2-10 overall and 0-8 in the SAC in the loss.

The win clinched a home match in the SAC tournament for the Bears, as the top four finishers get home first-round matches (LRU can’t finish any lower than third).

Ignacio de Goya scored his third goal of the year in the fifth minute against Catawba, and Cameron Saul scored in the 12th minute for the Bears.

In the second half, junior Goncalo Garcia and freshman Jamie de Manuel each scored. De Manuel’s goal was the first of his college career.

LRU outshot the Indians 26-11, including 11-7 on goal.

The lone Catawba goal came from Tom Joyce in the 60th minute on an assist from Tom Singhgolden.
Junior Alex Langer made six stops for LRU, and Gianluca Tommasi had seven for Catawba.

LRU — which has nine seniors — is 5-1 at home this season.

The Bears are six points ahead of Queens in the SAC race and own the tiebreaker over the Royals via a 3-2 win on Oct. 6.
