WOMEN’S COLLEGE TENNIS: Lenoir-Rhyne’s Murchland wins conference weekly award

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Emily Murchland, who won at No. 4 singles on a day Lenoir-Rhyne University clinched its first berth in the conference tournament championships, has won South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Women’s Tennis Player of the Week.

League officials announced her selection on Monday, a day after she broke a 4-all tie with Coker by pulling out a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win as the Bears prevailed 5-4.

She is junior from Mount Victoria, New Zealand.

Murchland went 2-0 at singles play for the week and picked up a victory at No. 1 doubles in the Bears’ 6-3 triumph over Catawba on the road last Wednesday.

She is 11-5 in singles play – 5-3 in league play – in addition to a 10-7 mark in doubles competition (4-4 against SAC foes).

LRU (10-7, 3-5) will next play on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the YMCA of Catawba Valley, facing Livingstone.
