COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Top-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne opens SAC tourney against Eagles

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Lenoir-Rhyne University, fresh off its 12th South Atlantic Conference (SAC) regular season softball title, opens the league tournament on Friday as the top seed.

The Bears (42-7, 19-1) — ranked No. 9 in NCAA Division II and second in the latest Southeast Region poll – face No. 8 seed Carson-Newman (29-19, 8-12) in a quarterfinal on Friday at 12:30 p.m. at Anderson (S.C.) University.

The Bears swept the Eagles – 3-1 and 7-5 – in a league regular season doubleheader in mid-April.

LRU has won the SAC tournament eight times, the most recent in 2013.

Game 1: No. 4 Wingate vs. No. 5 Anderson, 10 a.m.

Game 3: No. 2 Coker vs. No. 7 Catawba, 3 p.m.

Game 4: No. 3 Newberry vs. No. 6 Queens, 5:30 p.m.

Saturday’s games

Game 5: Game 1 Winner vs. Game 2 Winner, noon

Game 6: Game 3 Winner vs. Game 4 Winner, 2:30 p.m.

Game 7: Game 5 Winner vs. Game 6 Winner, 6:30 p.m.
