HICKORY – The Bears are off to a hot start in women’s softball after winning twice on Sunday to extend their win streak to eight games.
Lenoir-Rhyne University, playing at home, beat Shippensburg 5-1 and Virginia-Wise 2-0 to improve to 10-3 heading into the next games, a Wednesday doubleheader at Limestone (1:30 p.m.)
LRU 5, Shippensburg 1
Trailing 1-0, LRU sophomore pinch-hitter Mackensi Swain delivered a game-winning, two-run double in the bottom of the fourth inning with two outs.
The Bears put it away with a three-run fifth inning.
Junior Emily Kenley improved to 5-1 with a complete game victory. She allowed one unearned run while Taryn Wilson (3-2) took the loss for the Raiders.
Senior shortstop Madison Carter, the Bears’ leading hitter this year (.362), added an RBI double as LRU finished with 10 hits.
LRU 2, Virginia-Wise 0
Junior Brandi Parks threw her second shutout of the season, improving to 4-2 after scattering four hits and striking out eight.
LRU broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of sixth inning thanks to run-scoring ground outs by senior second baseman Madison Poe and Carter.
Virginia-Wise’s Taylor Brandts (0-1) suffered the loss despite going the distance and striking out six.
