COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Bears fall, go 2-3 in tournament in Alabama

GULF SHORES, Ala. – A five-run sixth inning wiped out Lenoir-Rhyne University’s lead on Sunday as Alabama-Huntsville nipped the Bears 6-4 in women’s softball.

The Chargers improved to 5-1 with a victory on the final day of the Gulf Coast Invitational while the Bears headed home at 2-3.

Senior Mackenzie Cates had the only RBI for LRU in an error-filled game. She walked with the bases loaded in the first inning.

The Bears had a 3-0 lead at one point but the Chargers got five runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a run-scoring single by Kiara Akles, who had three hits for Alabama-Huntsville.

The game featured five errors and six of the game’s 10 runs were unearned.

Junior Brandi Parks fell to 1-2 with a loss for LRU while Layton Murphy (4-0) got a win by pitching a complete game for the Chargers.

LRU plays its first home games of the season Saturday, facing Lees-McRae at noon and Virginia-Wise at 2 p.m. as part of the third annual Bear Bash.
