COLLEGE BASEBALL: Lenoir-Rhyne wins twice, off to 3-0 start to season

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Bears are already hot.

Lenoir-Rhyne University remained unbeaten in baseball on Saturday by beating Southern Wesleyan 4-0 and Francis Marion 7-5 in the Carolinas Hospital System Classic.

The Bears don’t play again until Wednesday when they face Barton in a doubleheader at McCrary Park in Asheboro with a 1 p.m. start.

LRU 4, Southern Wesleyan 0

LRU senior pitcher Matt Sullivan got the starting nod and was dominant, going seven innings and allowing three hits, striking out seven and walking one.

Senior Patrick Laganke and sophomore Brett Fulk completed the shutout on the back end, giving up one more hit and fanning four.

At the plate, the Bears doubled Southern Wesleyan in hits, 8-4.

Junior outfielder Justin Dean and sophomore second baseman Corbin Watson the Bears with two hits each.

Senior outfielder Marcus Shoemaker hit a two-run home run, his first of the season, in the fifth inning.

 LRU 7, Francis Marion 5

The Bears used five pitchers with sophomore Nolan Flachofsky (1-0) earning a victory in middle relief. He retired all seven batters he faced.

Senior Landon Whitson earned his second save in as many days, striking out the side in the ninth inning.

The Bears outhit Francis Marion 10-4 with Dean and junior first baseman Alex Reynolds leading the way with three hits each.

Shoemaker and junior outfielder Aaron Stamper both drove in two runs for the Bears, who rallied from a 4-1 deficit.

Francis Marion’s William Robbins hit a solo home run.

 Notes

Dean went five-of-11 (.455) on Saturday while the Bears’ pitchers have registered at least 11 strikeouts in all three of their games.
