MEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Lenoir-Rhyne nips Lincoln Memorial, goes into week in first place

HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University’s men head into next week atop the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) soccer standings after winning on Saturday.

The Bears used two penalty kicks and a long-range shot to nip visiting Lincoln Memorial 3-2 on Saturday at LRU, improved to 7-4 overall and 6-2 in the SAC.

Tusculum defeated LRU 2-1 in overtime on Thursday at Tusculum.

The Bears are ahead of Tusculum (4-2-1) and Queens (4-2) in the league standings as they prepare to play Catawba on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Hickory.

After that, the Bears have three regular season matches to go, Saturday at Belmont Abbey, Oct. 24 at home against Shaw and at Anderson (S.C.) on Oct. 7.

LRU 3, Lincoln Memorial 2

Seniors Nacho de Goya and Florian Simon each scored on a penalty kick, and deGoya scored a game-winner from about 30 yards out with less than three minutes to play.

The loss dropped Lincoln Memorial to 6-3-2, 3-2-1.

The Railsplitters had more shots overall, 14-10, and doubled the Bears in shots on goal, 10-5.

Seven yellow cards were called during the match.

Junior Alex Lander had eight saves for LRU, and Caleb Cothrin made three of Lincoln Memorial.

deGoya now has three goals this season while Simon has five.

The Bears improved to 4-1 at home this season

Tusculum 2, LRU 1, OT (Thursday)

Sophomore Victor Cascon scored the Bears’ goal, giving him at least one in six straight matches.

LRU outshot the Pioneers 11-10 (5-5 shots on goal).

Langer had three saves while Alejandro Quiriti made four for Tusculum.

The loss snapped the Bears’ three-match win streak.
