COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Red Hawks stay hot, collect 20-win season

HICKORY – Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) reached 20 wins over the weekend in women’s volleyball and heads into a week in which it has four matches on the road.

The Red Hawks, playing in the Wallace State Fall Bash in Hanceville, Ala., won matches over Coastal Alabama-South and Spartanburg Methodist on Saturday to improve 21-8.

CVCC went 1-1 at the tournament on Friday.

The Red Hawks, who have won 17 of their last 19 matches, play Tuesday at Surry Community College, matches Friday against Louisburg and Cape Fear at Louisburg, and on Saturday at Lenoir Community College.

Surry Community College and CVCC are both 7-0 in Region X.

The Red Hawks have one remaining home regular season match, Sophomore Night on Oct. 23 against Richard Bland College.

CVCC is ranked No. 16 among National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II teams.

CVCC 3, Coastal Alabama-South 2 (Saturday)

Behind Emma Clark’s 14 kills and six blocks, the Red Hawks won in five sets, 25-22, 25-18, 19-25, 26-28 and 15-9.

Clark was one of three Red Hawks in double digits in kills, including teammates Sage Harrington (11 kills) and Meredith Patterson (10 kills).

Three CVCC players also hit double digits defensively in digs — Emily Williams (21 digs), Madi Bolch (13) and Paige Sizemore (12).

Setter Emilee Webber had a season-high 27 assists, and setter Macy Pope added 15 assists.

CVCC 3, Spartanburg Methodist 1 (Saturday)

The Red Hawks earned their third win of the season against the Pioneers, winning 25-19, 15-25, 25-14 and 25-10.

Clark paced CVCC with 13 kills and seven blocks (four solo), while Patterson, Harrington and Siena Naotala added eight, seven and six kills each, respectively.

Williams tallied 21 digs, Sizemore added 10 digs and Pope made nine digs and 13 assists.

Webber led CVCC with 21 assists.

CVCC 3, Vincennes University 1 (Friday)

Behind 11 kills and three block assists from middle hitter Clark, the Red Hawks earned a four-set victory, 25-22, 20-25, 27-25 and 25-15.

Naotala added 10 kills and six blocks (all assisted) while Rachel Delcamp and Harrington also made nine and eight kills each.

Williams made a team-high 17 digs, and Bolch contributed 11 digs.

Webber etched a season-high in assists with 25, and Pope made 20 assists — her third 20-assist performance of the season.

Wallace State 3, CVCC 1 (Friday)

The Lions snapped a six-match win streak for CVCC, winning

25-23, 18-25, 14-25 and 22-25.

Delcamp paced CVCC with 10 kills and five blocks (four assisted) while Harrington and Clark added six kills apiece.

Defensively, Williams (25), Bolch (13) and Webber (10) led CVCC in digs.

Webber also made a team-high 19 assists, and Pope made 16 assists.

CVCC 3, Cleveland State 0 (Thursday)

The Red Hawks won on the road, 25-14, 25-20 and 25-13.

Naotala paced the Red Hawks with nine kills and a .533 hitting percentage, while Delcamp and Clark added eight and seven kills each, respectively.

Defensively, Clark made a team-high five blocks (four assisted), and the tandem of Williams (15) and Bolch (10) combined for 25 digs.

Emilee Webber and Pope made 15 and 12 assists each, respectively.
