MEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Anderson keeps Bears from winning outright league crown

ANDERSON, S.C. – Anderson (S.C.) played spoiler on Saturday in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) men’s soccer, nipping visiting Lenoir-Rhyne University 2-1 to keep the Bears from winning an outright league championship.

The Bears (10-5, 7-3) ended up sharing the regular-season title with Queens and got the top seed for the conference tournament – which begins on Tuesday – via an earlier 3-2 win over the Royals. It’s the first men’s soccer title for LRU.

Anderson (8-4-3, 5-2-3) gained the No. 4 seed and will open the league tournament at home on Tuesday against fifth-seeded Lincoln Memorial.

The Trojans scored in the 27th minute for an early lead on Saturday before LRU senior Ignacio de Goya knocked in the equalizer on an assist by Goncalo Garcia in the second half before Lucas Mostajo scored the game-winner in the 77th minute for the Trojans.

LRU outshot the Trojans 15-10 and had more corner kick opportunities (5-2).

Alex Langer gave up two goals and Anderson’s Gal Elyashiv gave up one goal and had four saves.

De Goya scored the sixth goal of the season and his fourth in the last five matches.
