MEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE: Lenoir-Rhyne smacks Newberry, runs win streak to 6

HICKORY – Myles Moffatt and Will Remsen each scored three goals on Saturday, leading third-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne University to its sixth straight men’s lacrosse victory.

The Bears overwhelmed visiting Newberry (S.C.) 17-4 in a South Atlantic Conference (SAC) match at Moretz Stadium, improving to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in league play.

Newberry dropped to 4-6 overall and 0-3 in the SAC.

LRU will go for its seventh straight victory on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Savannah, Ga., in a battle with fifth-ranked Tampa, Fla.

Remen’s three goals on Saturday were his first of the season. He is a senior from Baldwin, N.Y.

Newberry gained a 42-40 advantage in shots taken despite the 13-goal setback.

LRU senior goalkeeper Damon Cummins earned his first victory after making eight saves in three periods, and junior Eddie Schoenig added six stops in the last period.

Newberry’s Erick Szurley took a loss in goal despite making seven saves.

The Bears have now won 20 straight league regular-season matches, dating back three years, and they are 33-4 since the start of the 2016 season.

Newberry if fielding a men’s lacrosse team for the first time this season.
