WINGATE – The Lenoir-Rhyne University baseball team will take another shot at reaching 20 wins this season when it faces Wingate on Sunday at 1 p.m. on the road.

The Bulldogs prevented the Bears from hitting 20 wins on Friday when they opened a South Atlantic Conference (SAC) series with a 5-1 victory at Wingate, leaving LRU at 19-11 overall and 8-5 in the conference.

Wingate is 23-7 overall and 10-3 in league play.

Hunter Morgan (4-0) allowed the Bears just one run, pitching into the eighth inning, as the Bulldogs took over sole possession of first place by winning.

Zach Little led the way with two hits and RBIs, and the Bulldogs took control with a three-run sixth inning.

LRU junior designated hitter Caleb Beatty had two doubles and drove in the Bears’ only run.

Martin fell to 1-3, pitching into the sixth inning. He struck out three.

Beatty started as a DH for the fourth straight game – his first starts of the year – and is 8-of-13 in those four games.

Only three of the Bulldogs’ five runs were earned.

The Bears will need to win both games Sunday to continue their streak of having won four straight league weekend series.
