HICKORY – The NCAA Division II men’s lacrosse semifinal being played Sunday at Lenoir-Rhyne University – the Bears (17-2) against Saint Leo (15-2) – will be streamed live by Turner Sports
LRU officials announced the set up on Wednesday in preparation for Sunday’s 2 p.m. match at Moretz Stadium.
The Bears are ranked No. 5 in the nation and Saint Leo is ranked No. 6.
LRU advanced with its first NCAA Division II victory, winning 14-12 at home over No. 10 Colorado Mesa while Saint Leo pulled out a 12-11 overtime victory over seventh-ranked Tampa at home in a quarterfinal match last Saturday. The Lions’ Ethan Ticehurst scored the match-winner six seconds into the extra frame off a faceoff.
LRU is led by junior attacker Joe Buduo with 60 goals and 88 points – both school-records – while senior midfielder Ben Corrigan has 42 goals, 32 assists and 74 points on the year.
Corrigan came up big last week – three goals and four assists – as the Bears avenged an earlier regular season loss at home to the Mavericks.
The Bears, three-time defending regular season champions (2016-18) in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC), are 40-5 in their last 45 matches and 5-0 this season against teams ranked in Top 10 when the match was played.
Saint Leo — the 2018 Sunshine State Conference regular season champion — is led by the trio of Jake Gilmour, Kyle Pauwels and Charlie Kurtenbach. They’ve combined for 126 goals, 81 assists and 207 points.
Pauwels has a team-leading 52 goals while Gilmour totals the following: 35 scores, a team-leading 38 assists and 73 points. Gilmour is the 2018 SSC Player of the Year.
The other national semifinal includes third-ranked Seton Hill (17-1) and No. 2 Merrimack (16-1) on Sunday at 7:30 p.m., in North Andover, Mass.
The championship game is scheduled May 27, at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.
