NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne University men are already in a slump.

Newberry scored the final 13 points of a South Atlantic Conference (SAC) basketball game on Tuesday night to beat the visiting Bears 77-75

as LRU’s losing streak reached nine games dating back to last season.

Newberry (5-1, 1-0) had three players in double figures, led by Marshall Lange with 18 points.

Senior guard Billy Bates led LRU (0-4, 0-1) with 22 points.

He hit six 3-pointers in a reserve role and had five rebounds while junior guard Cory Thomas added 16 points and junior forward Bertrand Awana had 12 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks.

The Bears had a 44-16 run at one point, turning 14-point deficit into a 14-point lead.

Newberry hit 15 of 20 from the free-throw line.

LRU next plays on Saturday at home, facing Limestone in a league game at 4 p.m.
