MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Hawks scores 20 as Lenoir-Rhyne nips Belmont Abbey

BELMONT – Mason Hawks scored 20 points in his second start of the season on Wednesday afternoon, sparking Lenoir-Rhyne University’s 80-77 road victory over Belmont Abbey.

The Bears improved to 9-3 and the Crusaders dropped to 9-3 after their battle in the Wheeler Center.

LRU is now idle until a Jan. 5 home game against Tusculum.

Hawks hit six of 11 shots from 3-point range on Wednesday and the Bears made a season-high 15 shots from beyond the arc.

Senior center Bertrand Awana had 11 points and a career-high 15 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. He went 11-of-12 from the field in a win last season over Belmont Abbey, scoring 22 points and adding 13 rebounds.

Djibril Diallo scored 11 of the Bears’ first 21 points, finishing with 17 points, four rebounds and three assists while Devontae Weaver added a season-high 11 points.

L.J. McCoy, coming off the bench, led Belmont Abbey with 21 points.

LRU improved to 4-0 this season against Conference Carolina teams.
