MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Bears down Newberry, continue red-hot start (6-0)

HICKORY – With five players in double-figure scoring, Lenoir-Rhyne University’s men continued their red-hot start with an 88-82 home basketball victory over Newberry (S.C.) on Tuesday night.

The Bears are off to a 6-0 start after winning their first South Atlantic Conference (SAC) game.

Corey Thomas’ 24 points led LRU, Djibril Diallo added 20 points and R.J. Gunn had 13, Mason Hawks scored 12 and Darius Simmons provided 10.

Jonathan Jean posted nine assists for the Bears, who outscored the Wolves 52-42 in the paint.

LRU shot 51.4 percent and Newberry (1-3, 0-1) shot 53.2 percent.

The Bears are off to their best start since the 2015-16 season.

LRU’s next game is Saturday at 2 p.m., a non-conference battle at Limestone.
