COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Clifton wins Lott award from Bears’ win over Mars Hill

HICKORY – Left tackle Ronnie Clifton won the weekly Ronnie Lott Heavy Hitter Award for Lenoir-Rhyne University football from the Bears’ victory over Mars Hill.

Clifton, a junior from Front Royal, Va., opened huge holes in the run game in 59-27 home victory over the Lions last Saturday. LRU rushed for 305 yards, averaging 5.9 per run. Clifton’s work in the passing game also helped keep the pocket clean for Grayson Willingham, who threw four first-half touchdowns.

Other weekly award winners were right guard Jason Poe, a sophomore from Fitzgerald, Ariz., as Offensive Player of the Week, and Jonathan Nolan, an outside linebacker from Scottsdale, Ariz., as Defensive Player of the Week.
Jefferson Norwood, a sophomore kicker from Raleigh, was selected as the Special Teams Player of the Week. Half of his kickoffs resulted in touchbacks. He averaged 61 yards per kickoff.
Malik Dassie, a freshman running back from Sylvester, Ga., and Zeke Nance, a freshman from Calhoun, Ga., were named the Offensive and Defensive Scout Team Players of the Week, respectively.
LRU is 2-1 and 1-0 in the SAC and travels to play Wingate in a league game on Saturday with a 6 p.m. kickoff.
