COLLEGE BASEBALL: Newberry completes sweep of Lenoir-Rhyne

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Newberry College completed a three-game sweep of Lenoir-Rhyne University on Saturday in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) baseball, dowing the Bears 14-2 and 6-5 in an extra-inning game.

The visiting Bears fell to 5-9 overall and 0-3 in the league heading into their next game on Tuesday at Belmont Abbey College (5 p.m.).

Newberry improved to 11-4 overall and is 3-0 in the SAC and in first place as the Wolves and Bears are the only league teams to have played this season.

Newberry 14, LRU 2

Tomas Sorcia Jr. pitched eight innings, throwing 99 pitches and giving up two runs on four hits, to spark Newberrry.

Tyler Ackard went 2-for-3, walking once and driving in two runs and scoring twice, to lead the Wolves.

E.J. Ranel had two of the Bears’ four hits and he and Caleb Beatty each scored a run.

LRU starter Jake Conroy took a loss after going 3 1/3 innings. He gave up six runs on six hits, walked three and struck out one. The Bears then used five other pitchers.

LRU’s Grant Fuller had an eight-game hitting streak snapped in the loss.

Newberry 6, LRU 5 (9 inn.)

FREEMAN

Zane Torrence went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs for Newberry that included a game-winning double in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Alex Shirzaz started and pitching six innings for the Bears, giving up four runs on seven hits while striking out seven and walking three. When he left, the game was tied.

Hunter Martin took the loss in relief, throwing 2 1/3 innings and giving up two runs on five hits. He struck out three and walked two.

Designated hitter Matthew Freeman was 4-for-4 for LRU with two home runs, a double and two RBIs. Fuller went 2-for-5 with a double for the Bears.
