COLLEGE BASEBALL: Lenoir-Rhyne hammers Limestone, picks up seventh victory

HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University’s bats were booming on Wednesday as the Bears downed Limestone 13-2 in baseball at Bears Field.

Four players combined to go 10-for-17 and drive in 11 runs for the Bears, who grabbed a 5-0 lead through one inning and tacked on seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Clayton Jeffries (1-0) pitched five innings to get a win. He gave up one run (earned) with three strikeouts and three walks. The Bears (7-2) allowed just four hits.

LRU had 12 hits, led by first baseman Alex Reynolds with three and three RBIs. Designated hitter Aaron Stamper added two hits and drove in three runs, third baseman Will Jones had two hits and three RBIs and catcher Zach Shoemaker went 3-for-5 and drove in two runs.

Zach Piazza and Chase Allen each hit a home run for Limestone.

Garrett Sutt, the first of nine pitchers used by Limestone (5-3), suffered the loss. He lasted one-third of an inning, giving up three hits and five runs (three earned).

The Bears next play on Saturday at home, facing Goldey-Beacon in a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m.
