COLLEGE BASEBALL: Lenoir-Rhyne grabs first conference win of season

HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University, powered by a quality start from Jake Conroy and a seven-run third inning, wrapped up a weekend baseball series by beating Anderson (S.C.) 14-2 on Monday.

The Bears (7-11, 1-5) picked up their first South Atlantic Conference (SAC) win of the season after falling 10-7 and 2-1 on Saturday to Anderson (8-8, 2-4) in a league doubleheader.

LRU’s next game is Wednesday, a 5 p.m. home battle with Coker College at LRU.

LRU 14, Anderson 2 (Monday)

Conroy gained his second win of the season, working six innings and giving up two runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out seven.

Hunter Martin and Griffin Templeton checked Anderson on three hits over the final three innings.

Anderson starter Matthew Stanley took the loss after going 2 1/3 innings and allowing six earned runs.

Clayton Jeffries went 3-for-4 for the Bears while Brandon Odachowski was 3-for-4 for the Trojans. Corbin Watson had three hits, scored three runs and drove in two runs for LRU.

Grant Fuller and Jeffries have combined for 49 of the Bears’ 170 hits this season and they’ve combined for 27 of LRU’s 91 RBIs.

Anderson 2, LRU 1 (Saturday)

Odachowski and Jackson Strange each drove in a run for the Trojans, who won despite a complete game from Bears starter Alex Shirazi.

Shirazi gave up one earned run, allowing five hits. He walked one and struck out six.

Trojans starter Austin Todd (1-1) went six innings, giving up one run on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Christian Carpenter pitched one inning in relief to gain a save.

The Bears scored their only run on a run-scoring double down the right-field line by Fuller that scored Will Jones.

Anderson 10, LRU 7 (Saturday)

The Trojans rallied to win after the Bears opened a 7-1 lead in the first inning when E.J. Ranel hit a grand slam.

Anderson scored three runs in the fifth inning and one run in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to win.

Trojans starter Will Gee picked up his second win of the year, going seven innings. He gave up seven earned runs on nine hits and struck out nine. Christian Carpenter pitched 1 1/3 innings to earn his fourth save of the season.

Chandler Castleberry led Anderson with three hits, two runs scored and four RBIs.

LRU starter Paul Hall lasted four innings, giving up four earned runs. He walked six and struck out six, and reliever Nolan Falachosfky went two innings and took the loss (four runs, four walks).
